KRUGER NATIONAL PARK

The Phalaborwa Gate opened in June 1961. An average of 180,000 visitors (approximately 55,000 vehicles) per annum, enter the Park via the Phalaborwa Gate. This means about 15,000 visitors per month but these figures fluctuate during season.

The Kruger National Park was proclaimed in 1926 to protect the wildlife of the Lowveld and now covers an area of ± 20,000 km². It is unrivalled in the diversity of its life forms and a world leader in advanced environmental management techniques and policies.
The Park is home to an impressive 336 tree species, 49 fish species, 34 amphibian species, 114 reptile species, 507 bird species and 147 mammal species.

Activities such as guided bushwalks, night and day game drives, 4X4 overland trails and bushbraais are being offered. Facilities such as the Skukuza 9-hole golf course (for those who enjoy a bit of an adventurous game), conference facilities, picnic facilities, swimming pools, restaurants and accommodation in various forms from camping to sleepover hides, cottages, huts and guest houses, are available. You are sure to find your own corner of paradise here.

With the establishment of the Greater Limpopo Transfrontier Park, two border posts linking the Kruger National Park to Mozambique are in the process of being developed. The first being the Pafuri Border Post just south of Crooks Corner and the second being at Giriyondo, in the northern section between Letaba and Mopani Camps. Culturally there is ample evidence of Middle Stone Age Man or human presence in the area (from between ± 20,000 - 18,000 years ago), as well as evidence of Early Stone Age Man or Homo Erectus (some 500,000 - 100,000 years ago). Also in evidence are findings of San people in the form of ± 180 Rock Art sites and Iron Age people from recent history to about 20,000 years ago. About 300 archaeological Iron Age sites have also been discovered, these dating from recent history to 450 A.D.With the introduction of the Wild Card, an affordable means has been made available to domestic and foreign visitors to the park. Now one can enjoy the sights and scenery as often as you want, even if you are staying outside the Park. A quick trip down the river at sunset is enough to relieve any tormented soul after a hard day’s work! It also gives wider accommodation options to those who choose to stay outside the Park and visit the Park occasionally over your period of stay.
